Pocklington Byelaws for 1712

POCKLINGTON MANORIAL BY-LAWS (HCAO DDPY 20/20)
For 1712

MANNOR                 Paines laid at the Court Leet and Court
OF                           Baron of our Soverayne Lady the Queen and
POCKLINGTON        Robert Dolman Esqr Lord of the said Manor
                               held the fifteenth day of May One Thousand
                               Seven Hundred and Twelve before James
                               Blackbeard gentlm steward there

Imprs  That none wilfully turn any horse oxen or sheep in the cowhold between Ladyday and Michaelmas upon paine of every horse ox or sheep 2s 6d

That none break the stuble or Ings before the Bylawmen for the time being give publick notice by the Belman for that purpose on paine of 2s 6d

That none shall put any sheep into the Ings or Carr before St Andrew day on paine of 3s 4d

That none shall put any horse on the South Moor before Midsummer day on paine of 3s 4d

That no person or persons do put or cause to be put any beasts on the Common to lye them down on the night before St Mark day on paine for every beast 2s 6d

That every one gripp their lands sufficiently within six days after they are sown and plowed and so keep them from time to time on paine of 1s a broad and 6d a narrow 1s 6d

That none kindle any fire in any oven lead or kilne before three o clock in the morning or after nine at , night on paine of 3s 4d

That none wash any beast meat or fleshy thing in the Common River but beneath the Skiners bridge on paine of 3s 4d

That everyone make up their fences betwixt neighbour and neighbour and so keep them up from time to time on paine of 3s 4d

That every one remove their dunghills out of the common street before St James day being the ffair day on paine of 3s 4d

That every one make up their parts in the lng dyke Cowdyke Wandell dyke Prickmoor dyke within ten days after Ladyday and cowhold parts within six days after Ladyday in Lent and so sufficiently keep them from time to time till Michaelmas or harvest be done on paine of 6d

That none turn the chappell well water out of its course above 24 hours on paine of 2s 6d

That none shall gather any cow claps or beasts dung in the cowhold before six o clock at night and that they carry away the said dung from the common on paine of 3s 4d

That all officers shall give account of what money they receive in the respective offices at such times as are hereafter mentioned Viz the Constables and Bylaw men to deliver their accounts fairly written to be seen and allowed on by the Jury of the court when as they are discharged of their offices for every person that makes default 6s 8d

That none shall over stint the common on paine of every beast or horse 6s 8d

That none shall lay their fewell within a yard of their chimney on paine of 3s 4d

That every inhabitant in this town shovell up their dunghills before the head fairs that the same be not noysome to passengers on paine of ls

That no sheep go on the Common at washing time below the White Mill on paine every score 3s 4d

That 12 tennants of this Mannor shall ride the fairs with the Lord or His Bayliff having notice given on paine of every one that neglecteth or refuseth 2s

That none rescue any goods from the common pinder on paine of 3s 4d

That no person shall snayth cut down or plant any willow trees or other trees within the Mannor on the Lords

Waists without the Lords licence first had on paine of 6s 8d

That all and every person and persons within the township of Pocklington do ring or cause to be rung their swine from time to time on paine of every swine unrung 2s

That the swineherd of Pocklington for the time being do not nor shall not keep or cause to be kept the swine against any swarth balk quicksett hedge or any inclosure on paine of 6d

That none shall take in any beast out of the town into the common except a milk cow for the release of his or her family nor a draught horse except for the strength of his draught on paine of 6s 8d

That the Bylawmen for the time being shall every year betwixt [sic] and the first of February take an account of what number of sheep every inhabitant within the Township of Pocklington hath on the common or in the fields and the same to give to the Jury upon paine of their neglect every time 6s 8d
