| Archbishop Wulfred of Canterbury (805-832), penny, Group II, moneyer Swefherd, Archbishop's tonsured bust facing within inner circle, his pallium decorated with crosses, a single large pellet at either side, vvlfredi arcihepiscopi; rev., monogram dorovernia c in inner circle, svvefherd moneta (cf. N. 240 (but has the the pellets on obverse); S. 888), slightly cracked, with a small rim chip and evidently an excavated coin, otherwise devices very fine and a strong portrait, rare Found at Barmby Moor (near Pocklington), 1984; purchased 1984. Auction in USA in 1997. |
