Meynell Grocers Shop
Meynell's family grocer was on the corner of Market place and New Pavement from 1902 to 1971. It is where Swirl's Ice Cream Parlour is today.
The Meynell brothers Herbert and James started their grocers shop in Pocklington in 1902. Herbert was a grocers assistant in a shop in Tute Hill, Pavement, Pocklington, in the 1901 census. Whilst his brother James was working as a grocers assistant in East Cowton, N.Yorks. where their father, John, had a grocers shop. Kelly's Directory for 1905 shows Meynell brothers, Grocers, Market Place.

It was in a prominent place on the corner of Market Place and New Pavement. The brothers built up the store to be one of Pocklington's most remembered shops. They delivered groceries to all the local villages and farms. I can clearly remember Les Pearson delivering provisions to our farmhouse in Bishop Wilton in the 1960's. Phil Gilbank remembers their warehouse in the 1960's in Chapmangate in the old brewery building. " I remember working in the big building on Bob-a-Job week when Meynell's grocers used it as a warehouse". Herbert Meynall retired in 1971 and the shop closed (see below).
