A letter wriiten by the Chairman of the Pocklington Board of Guardians is recorded in the minutes of the meeting held on 22 February 1898:
Allerthorpe Hall
It was my intention to attend your meeting today and formally hand over the picture of the Pocklington Board of Guardians and District Council as it is now hung on the walls of the Board Room for the first time ………(states why he cannot attend) ……
I trust however it will receive your acceptance as a lasting remembrance of Her Most Gracious Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee and also a as a small memento of many kindnesses and uniform courtesy that I as your chairman have received from all members of the Board and District Council, and I trust it will also be a pleasing remembrance of all the members and a reminder of the kindly feelings which exist among all.

The next paragraph includes a resolution accepting the picture …with best thanks ……..for his hanson gift.
Mr and Mrs Sargeant were elected as Master and Matron of the workhouse at a guardians meeting on the 3 March 1894. Master’s salary £35 per year, matron’s £25 per year, plus rations, washing and apartments in the Workhouse for both of them. They started work on the 10 March 1894. Ref: Guardians Minutes PUP / 1 / 2 / 13. They were still at the workhouse in 1911.
At the Guardians meeting on 6 April 1897 they approved a new Insurance policy for the new building and alterations:
New Vagrants block insured as follows
Main building £2,410
Lunacy Block £ 150
Stone breaking shed and oakum store 1 £200
Stone breaking shed and oakum store 2 £100
There were other bits of insurance as well.
The main block [old WH and infirmary presumably] £1,925
Total insurance £7,000.
