POCKLINGTON is a market town, township, and parish, in the 'Wilton Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, and a part in the liberty of St. Peter ; 6¾ miles from Market-Weighton, 13 from York, 14 from Sledmere, 16 from Malton, 16¾ from Howden, 17 from Great Driffield, 26 from Hull, and 195 from London ; situated on a small stream that falls into, the Derwent, and within a mile of a canal communicating with that river, which furnishes the means of supplying the town and adjacent country with coal, lime, and manure, and various articles of merchandize, and of conveying to different places, corn, flour, timber, and other produce. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in agriculture, from which (together with the market and fairs), they derive their principal support. The Hon. Capt. Arthur Duncombe, M.P., of Kilnwick Percy (a handsome seat in this neighbourhood), is lord of the manor, and holds a court leet once a year. Pocklington is a polling station for the East-Riding of the county, and is the centre of a union of forty seven parishes under the New Poor Law. In 1840, the society of Odd Fellows erected a hall, which is also occasionally used for assemblies and concerts ; and a Temperance Hall has likewise been recently opened, in which occasionally appropriate lectures are delivered.
The parish church, a large plain building, is dedicated to All Saints. The living is a vicarage in the patronage of the Dean of York. The Rev. J. F. Ellis is the present incumbent. There are chapels for Independents, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, and Roman Catholics. The free school here, liberally endowed, is under the patronage of St. John's College, Cambridge. The number of scholars is unlimited. There is, besides, a National School. The market, which is well supplied with corn and other marketable commodities, is held on Saturdays. The fairs are the 7th March, 7th May, 6th August, and 8th November, for cattle ; and the day after the latter fair is a statute for hiring servants. There are races also, on the 2nd May annually. The parish contained, in 1831, 2,265 inhabitants; and at the last census (June 1841), 2,318.
