Herbert Tinson
Special Constable in Pocklington
1914-1918 |
George "Chuffy" Tinson
He was born on 15 April 1923 so at the outbreak of WW2 was 16 years old. He joined up underage, in the Royal Tank Regiment*. He later joined the Palestine Police force and was later posted to France. He was one of the youngest soldiers to be evacuated from Dunkirk. The story goes that the CO contacted his mother when they found out he was underage and she said "he's made his bed and will have to lie in it". They sent him to Palestine rather than the front line because of his age. |

| Joe Hunter - In the second world war he spent time in cardiff keeping new recruits in order, he said weekends were like the front line as he was a military police man and was a well known all round sportsman, playing rugby union, and league football and cricket for Pocklington. He rememberd golng to away matches by horse and cart. |
Redvers Harrison - ran away when 14 years old to 1914-1918 war in Gordon Highlanders.

| * The following information is supplied by Kevin Warcup. Chuffy is wearing the cap badge of the Royal Tank Regiment and on his right arm you can see the white shape above the elbow, that is actually a first world war tank arm badge worn by all RTR soldiers in battle dress/no2 dress and today is worn by all ranks when wearing best coveralls on parade, Something which is done every year at the Cenotaph in London the weekend after Remembrance Sunday. I know that the 2nd, 4th and 7th Royal Tank Regiments were in France at this time so he could have served in any of these. I also note that a lot of Pocklington Soldiers ended up in obscure Regiments not local to the area. My granddad for instance in World War 1 ended up in the 2nd Inniskilling Fusiliers (Irish Regiment) They seem to have been put where they were needed. |
