The photo of Charlie Buttle's general grocer shop in Union Street has Charlie on the left with his daughter Emily Florence Buttle (later to marry Percy Gilson the jeweller) and wife Mary Buttle (nee Clayton). It was taken around 1900 (give or take a few years) as Charlie died in 1907 and Emily, the youngest of six, was born in 1881. Mary continued the grocer/butchers shop after he died. She died in 1917.

Charlie & Mary had 5 sons and 1 daughter:
George Thomas (father of George Harold, Herbert William (Boot and Shoe Repairer in Union Street) and Francis Charles aka "Frank" Buttle who died in WW1 - is one of the fallen heroes.)
Charles Frederick - (not much known about)
Alfred (was in the Boer war and emigrated to Australia (after time in South Africa) in 1905 - had 5 children in Australia but also travelled on the boat with a Buttle from Kent (most likely not related), so not all early Australian Buttles are descended from Alf but some will be.
John Henry Buttle married Hannah Margaret Bentley (daughter of John Edward and Elizabeth who had the Old Red Lion). John and Hannah's children included both Eric & Jack and also Charles Edward "Eddie".
Herbert Ullathorne (Piano Teacher) married Rose and had a daughter Winnie and son Dick. Dick had the jewellers shop on the corner of Deans Lane and Market Place.
Emily Florence (later to marry Percy Gilson the jeweller)
