Procter's Grocery shop was operating in Market Place as early as 1889 with proprietor Christopher Proctor. Christopher was an apprentice aged 16 in 1881 for Joseph Whitwell in Richmond, North Yorkshire, a Grocer and Tea Dealer. He must have opened the Pocklington store around 1888. Christopher became a respected Pocklington resident, was a councilor and eventually made a Justice of the Peace. The grocery business was still operating in the 1937 Trade Directory. A Drapery was opened in Market Place by William Henry Procter (brother of Christopher), Henry Procter 1862-1931 was married to Eliza Jackson Judson
