Waterloo / Clubs Brewery
The buldings at the back of the Waterloo Hotel were used for the brewing of beer in the 1860's. Around 1880 it is speculated that Youngs built a new brewery in Chapmangate and brewed beer there until around 1910, when the premises were possibly acquired by the Cattle brewery. Youngs also owned The Waterloo Hotel and they also owned the Ousegate Brewery at Selby. In 1921, the Cattle brewing business was acquired by the Tadcaster Tower Brewery Co. and then they traded as York & District Clubs breweries who produced the 'Loco Ales' from 1925. The 1927 O.S. map of Chapmangate shows two breweries, with the site of the one illustrated below that the locals called 'The Clubs Brewery'.

Thought & speculation It is speculated that Cattle bought the Youngs Waterloo Brewery building a few doors up from the 'Old Brewery' as the Tadcaster Tower Brewery seemed to set up their business in the Waterloo brewery building and not the 'Old Brewery' site.
1921 Ref. Don Parry* The Cattle business was acquired by the Tadcaster Tower Brewery Co. in 1921 with 8 tied houses. which were conveyed to Tower Brewery by Ronald Middlebrook Cattle, brewer and executor to Henry Ward Cattle, deceased. The brewery was described as a three  quarter plant with extensive storage cellars,25 quarter malt kiln, spiit & bottling stores, stabling and coach house plus a bay windowed dwelling house fronting the main street, all the area covering 1647 sq.yards.
