FUNERAL OF MR. BARLOW.
IMPRESSIVE OBSEQUIES.
Pocklington loses one of its most respected residents by the death of Mr. George Edward Barlow, Chemist, of Pocklington, which sad event took place at his residence on Saturday morning last. He was born in Sheffield, on October 22nd, 1844, and educated at Wesley College, Sheffield. In 1860 he took over the chemist's business of the late Mr. Kirby James, of Pocklington in the year 1869. In connection with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, he filled all the offices which are open to laymen, and also founded the Pocklington Adult Bible Class 17 years ago, which he personally conducted for 16 years. It began as a class for young men and grew till it numbered over 200 members. His life and character are well worthy of imitation.
The Rev Joseph Watson, superintendent minister of the Pocklington Circuit, led the mournful procession into the Wesleyan Methodist Church, where the first service was held; he was followed by the Rev J. G Lawrence, Rev J. D. Brynford Jones, Rev. P. J. Robertson, Rev. A. G. Burnham, and the chief mourners viz., Mrs Barlow (widow), Messrs G. E. P. Barlow, P. S. Barlow, and W. Barlow (sons), the Misses E. M. Barlow and A. E. Barlow (daughters), Mr Lawrence Smith (Doncaster) cousin, Rev. G. Patterson (London), and Miss F. Patterson (Ilkley), brother and sister of Mrs Barlow.
Among the large congregation that had assembled in the church or at the graveside, we noticed :—Rev. A. and Mrs Farries, Mrs English, Mr Thos. Robson, Mr F W Robson, Councillors Smith, Everingham, Todd, and Thomas, Mr and Mrs Smithson, Mr Bloomer, Miss Thomas, Mrs Jennings, Mr and Mrs Fowler, Mr G Fowler, Mr and Mrs J C Lee, Mrs Broom, Mrs Coulson, Mrs Gilyead; Mr and Mrs Swallow, Mrs Sherwood, Mr J Byass, Mr Greenshaw, Mr F Scaife, Mr T Scaife, Mr J Baston, Mr Whitehead, Mr B Cundall, Mr-Smith (Warter), Mr H Hatfield, Miss Empson, Mrs Jowett, Misses Robson, Mrs D and Misses Richardson, Mrs and Miss Jebson, Mr and Mrs James Jebson, (Yapham Grange), Mr and Mrs Boyden, Mr and Mrs C Stather, Mrs Dunn, Miss Bonner, Mrs Bedford. Mr and Mrs W Tinson, Miss Smith, Mrs Douthwaite, Mrs Sandwith, Mr and Mrs Franks, Rev G. H. Stock (vicar), Mrs Johnson, Mrs Fisher, Mrs W H Jebson, Miss Beal, Mrs Buttle, Messrs B Thompson, J T Lamb, H Cattle, Bloomer, Jameson, Pickard, Bielby, Wilson, Stubbs, W Forth, Gautry, J Todd, Lazenby, J Britton, T N Stephenson, G Brigham, T Grant, Stewart, A. Summerson, Percy and Lambert Laister, Melrose, J Johnson, T. Smithson, &c.
Rev. J.Watson conducted the first portion of the ceremony, Rev. J G Lawrence (a gentleman who ministered in the circuit a short while ago) the second. Hymn 51 in the new book was impressively rendered, the following being a copy of the first verse :
Eternal Light! eternal Light !
How pure the soul must be,
When placed within Thy searching sight,
It shrinks not, but, with calm delight.
Can live, and look on Thee !
After the Rev J. D. Brynford Jones had delivered a beautiful prayer, the mourners wended their way to the cemetery, where the ceremony at the graveside was performed by the Revs J Watson and P. J. Robertson, the choir singing " Rock of Ages."
Wreaths were received from the widow and family, from all at Crossbeck House, Ilkley, from the Members of the Adult Bible Class, from Jeannie, from E. G Penty, from all at Eden Place, and from George and Marion. The grave was prettily decorated with evergreens and choice flowers by Mr James Johnson.
The following were the bearers:- Messrs Daniel Richardson, J. Todd, W. Jameson, W. E. Capelin, W. Wright, and T. Read. The coffin was of panelled oak, with massive brass mountings, and the breast plate bore the simple inscription :
"George Edward Barlow. Born, 22nd October, 1844, Died, 31st December, 1904."
Messrs Stubbs & Son were the undertakers.
